People are afraid of me – Rimii Sen

After been appreciated for her remarkable performance in Johnny Gaddaar, Shubhomitra Sen aka Rimii Sen would now be seen playing her career’s first double role in Rakesh Sarang’s Horn Ok Please.

Rimii talks about her experience doing a double role and also shares why she hasn’t yet been involved in casting couch.

Q. What is your character in your film “Horn OK Please”?
A. I am playing double role in the film. In one of them I am paired against Nana Patekar while another one against Muzammil. Both the characters are quit similar.

Q. This is your first film in a double role, how difficult was it to portray both the characters?
A. The only difference I found was in the body language of both the characters. Otherwise the two characters were almost alike.

Q. What was it that made you accept this film?
A. I really found the story to be quiet interesting and different. That’s the reason, I couldn’t say no to Rakeshji after hearing the script.

Q. How did you accept your roles in the initial stage of your career?
A. Earlier I did not give much importance to roles. I only used to see the banner, who is the hero and the director. Because at that time I thought I won't get recognized if I do experimental films. So I looked for big banners with good star cast.

Q. So, what kind of film’s you like to do now?
A. I would like to work in thriller kind of films. But unfortunately, as of yet no such film have come to me.

Q. Are you doing any Bengali film?
A. As of now I am not doing any Bengali film. But in future if something good comes up then I will definitely do it.

Q. Have you ever faced the situation of casting couch?
A. No I have never fallen into such situations ever because I am very straight forward person and say anything on one’s face. People are afraid of me due to my nature.

Q. How many times do you make your producers run after you to say 'ok' for a film?
A. I don't make any one run; rather I look for signing films because I like working and keep myself busy. If I like the script, I will sign the film immediately and if I don't understand the character or something, then, I generally take two to three days to sign a film.

Q. Any plans on commercial ads?
A. I am waiting for some nice offer. If nice offer, good product combined with a good amount comes up, then I will definitely be doing ads.

Q. What about “Dhoom” the film? Why did you opt out of the next series of Dhoom?
A. I opted out of Dhoom because I am tired of doing guest appearances. I don’t want to be seen as furniture in films.

Q. Your other projects…
A. I am doing Santosh Gidvani’s Shagird. I don't have much role in the film but I liked the idea of the film, so wanted to be a part of the film. I am playing a journalist in it.

Wedding can’t wait for right time – Sonali

Q. What qualities would you look for in your man?
A. Honesty and sincerity. He may not be the best looking guy, but he should understand me.

Q. Don’t looks matter to you?
A. Not so much, but he should be presentable, for if a person can’t respect himself, how will he respect our relationship?

Q. Your take on ‘love at first sight’…
A. It is very dangerous to fall in love at first sight, for then you only rely on looks which can really be deceptive. For me, the nature of a person, not only towards me, but the society in general, also counts. He should be devoted to his work and not just blow away dad’s hard-earned money.

Q. Do you believe in going out on dates to know a person?
A. No, I don’t understand this concept of dating. If I love a person, I will go out with him. It’s as simple as that.

Q. Should your man woo you with flowers and all the other chivalrous trappings?
A. No, a nice conversation which has emotional depth and truth written all over it is enough to make me happy. My guy need not do more.

Q. Are men and women different?
A. See, actually no two human beings, be it of the same sex or opposite sex can ever think alike, but having said that, it’s how we can reconcile these differences and enjoy life as a couple is what I find interesting.

Q. Is it possible to find the perfect man?
A. No, everybody has some or the other flaw. So this concept of a perfect man is a non starter. But if you love a person truly, you should be in a position to be able to overlook some negative traits.

Q. There is a lot of talk about giving space in a relationship, what’s your definition of space?
A. To allow your partner freedom to do things that he likes and vice versa. So, if my guy likes football, I would not stop him from watching the game; but then he should also not stop me from spending quality time with my girl friends.

Q. Would parental consent be important?
A. Yes, it is very important that my guy has the blessings of my folks.

Q. Is there a Mr. Right hiding in the closet?
A. Yaar, had he been there, I would have already got married to him. I don’t believe in waiting for the right time.

Bachchan's figures on 'Paanchvi Pass' give incomplete picture: Siddhartha Basu

By Radhika Bhirani, New Delhi, May 26: The statistics that veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan presented in his blog about "Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain" hosted by Shah Rukh Khan fail to give a complete picture, says Siddhartha Basu, the producer of the TV quiz show.

"Mr. Bachchan is entitled to his views and we respect his opinion, whether we agree with it or not. The figures sent to him as used in the blog give an incomplete picture," Basu told IANS.

On his blog, the Big B had commented on Shah Rukh's stint in "Paanchvi Pass" and questioned why "despite the presence of the biggest name in the business", the show was showing a depleting performance as per Television Rating Points (TRPs).

"'Paanchvi Pass', or as one rival channel executive sniggered, 'Paanchvi Fail', after its not too encouraging numbers, facing relative lower ratings, is what I wish to debate on," wrote Amitabh. However, he later apologised for this analysis.

Amitabh also made uncharitable comparisons between himself and Shah Rukh as hosts of the popular game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC) that is no longer on air.

Basu, the brainchild behind both the shows, explained: "With the exponential growth in TV sets and viewers, analysts have shown how each subsequent series of 'KBC' actually had a higher viewership than the earlier ones and 'KBC 3' with Shah Rukh had the highest number of viewers."

"This no reflection on the excellence of Mr. Bachchan's hosting of the show or Shah Rukh's wit and charm.

"I believe Shah Rukh makes a superb host of 'Paanchvi Pass', and his repartee, articulation, sense of humour and unmatched ability to think on his feet mark him out as a truly world class host."

Apart from Amitabh's analysis that has invited a lot of media attention, there has been speculation that the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches have affected the popularity of "Paanchvi Pass".

Basu admits that IPL has affected the show's viewership, saying: "Yes, of course, all new shows launched during this period such as 'Paanchvi Pass', and running ones too have been hugely affected by the IPL. A truer picture of the response to the show would emerge after IPL as its telecast would continue for the full run of 36 episodes."

Being a brand: Shahenshah Bachchan versus Badshah Khan (Opinion)

By Chitra Padmanabhan: When a superstar-turned-'national figure' like Amitabh Bachchan starts toting graphs and pie charts to show that he is far ahead in television show ratings than a much younger colleague, Shah Rukh Khan, it reveals a great deal about the icon.

A few days on, when the same superstar announces that it was not his intention to indulge in comparisons with colleagues, it reveals a few more layers of the famed star make-up.

These actions are an involuntary admission on Bachchan's part that his iconic status notwithstanding, he is a brand in the market and has to fight for his place in that mercurial space, like anyone else.

Like Shah Rukh, for instance, who consistently trails him in 'all-time popular star' polls. Khan is so damnably comfortable being a brand in the market and having a price. He thinks being priceless is a waste of time in an age of convergence when cinema, television, advertising and live shows form a giant entertainment block, feeding off each other, and offering blockbuster revenue models to he who dares.

This space demands a different kind of star. In the late 1970s and early 80s, when Bachchan became a big name, television was a cottage industry. The big screen was the big turn-on; a star's aura depended in part on mystique born out of his/her remoteness.

But life in the coiled times of 24-hour television, 24-hour entertainment and 24-hour advertisements, promotions and endorsements is totally different. A star is one, whose visage, still or moving, is carpet-bombed in magazines, on TV channels and in ads that sell the good life. It testifies to his popularity and brand value; can you imagine the hard work in being top of the mind of nano-attention spans? It even extends to burning the midnight oil for blog posts to connect to that vast audience with a sudarshan chakra called viewers' response.

But look at the bonanza it fetches through endorsement, that contemporary fairy tale of the marketplace. Endorse a string of products and see your home fires burn brighter, with a film thrown in every year. Whether it is curing indigestion, fanning a neighbour's envy or putting down unimaginable stunts or emotions to fizz bottled inside, how does it matter?

Everything hinges on how you create a persona and positioning to attract the market, meshing personal and professional aspects. Here's where Bachchan and Khan present an interesting contrast.

The aura of 'Shahenshah' Bachchan subtly signals that he may be in the market for whatever reasons but is above it; he is a man of lineage harking back to the literary, cultured old world elite. Thus a mundane ad for a muscle relaxant is couched in ringing poetry as befits his background. Even his critiques of colleagues must sound urbane. Alongside, Bachchan's world is one of 'tradition' as witnessed in the wedding of his son.

It's a persona that has great appeal. It holds out the promise that you do not become what you consume; your past, your 'tradition' and the privilege of heredity remains intact.

In complete contrast, 'Badshah' Khan gleefully admits that the market is his world. That in a shrinking world, possibly the biggest adventure is the act of buying. Whether it is a Kajol in his arms or the keys to a new car, he lights up in the same way. What are you made of, is the punchline of a branded watch ad that Khan does, and it sums up his persona.

In Khan's world, it is all right to desire. In fact in an ad for a dish satellite, he chides the viewers for not asking for more. You don't need lineage; it is possible to create your own world in the present free of the fixities of the past. After all, didn't Khan gargle with a soft drink first thing in the morning in "Dil To Paagal Hai"? No wonder Khan is a first choice mascot for much of the corporate world...

The stakes are high in this world. But for those who inhabit it, it is a land of cash cows and eternal light. Be it Bachchan or Khan, they have to work at sharp silhouettes of personas to keep their individualistic brand values alive.

So one breezily buys (okay, in part) an entire team of cricketers - who at times seem like non-performing assets - and adds another acute angle to his persona. The other, befitting his elder statesman image, works late at night on a 'serious' - almost academic - blog post about the risky business of TRPs. Life is tough, boss.

I take Zoya the director seriously: Farhan Akhtar

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 25: Talented director Farhan Akhtar has completed "Rock On", his first full-fledged film as an actor. He is now on to his second film, which is being directed by his sister Zoya, and says he takes her seriously on the sets of "Luck By Chance".

"It's imperative for me to take my director very seriously even if she is my sister. When I'm on the sets with Zoya, I do see her as my sister. But I also see her as my director. I can't separate the two," Farhan told IANS in an interview.

Right now, the man behind movies like "Dil Chahta Hai" and "Lakshya" is building six-pack abs for Zoya's film.

"I'm undergoing all-round training. You see I play a struggler trying to get into Bollywood in 'Luck By Chance'. I hope to be a very convincing struggler. All of us have to struggle. At the end of the day, actors, even directors-turned-actors, have to act."

Although Saif Ali Khan has opted out of Farhan's next venture, he is all set to roll it out in October this year.

"Yes, Saif is not working in 'Voice From The Sky' any more. The chase begins all over again. But we are starting in October. But some key actors are still to be cast. It'll take me a month more to get the cast in place."

Excerpts from an interview:

Q: Am I speaking to Farhan Akhtar the actor?

A: At the moment, it looks like it. I just completed Gattu (Abhishek) Kapoor's film. And now I'm working on my sister Zoya's film. I'm enjoying every minute of it.

Q: I heard you're building your six abs for Zoya's film?

A: (Laughed) Actually, I'm undergoing all-round training. You see, I play a struggler trying to get into Bollywood in "Luck By Chance". I'm being trained by Cheetah Yagneesh, who's been a part of the film industry for a long time and has even directed a couple of films. He trains actors to become a part of the film industry. And since I play a Bollywood struggler, I've hired his services to make me look convincing. He'll appear on the screen along with me as my trainer.

Q: Build your muscles and all?

A: No just the action, weapon training, hand-to-hand combat, etc. That portion of the film is over. I did a couple of sessions with him before facing the camera. I realised it isn't easy to be a struggler. It looks easy from the outside, but once you get down to doing it, it's a very demanding kind of discipline.

Q: How convincing will you look as a struggler?

A: I hope to be a very convincing struggler. All of us have to struggle. At the end of the day actors, even directors-turned- actors have to act.

Q: You play an aspiring singer, then aspiring actor. Both dreamers...

A: Right. In 'Rock On' I think my character has a relatively easier time realising his dreams. I've a lot of friends who are musicians and they have been able to remain focused on their music. They've a no-nonsense approach to their life and dreams. No politics, no games, no mind games, no distractions. With an aspiring actor, the dynamics change. There're so many wheels within wheels and so many levels of politics in the film industry. Basically, there's a core of innocence to being a musician that's denied to an actor.

Q: Being a star wasn't easy even for the actors of yesteryears.

A: I am sure it wasn't easy for Mr. Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan. People think it's easier for star-sons. Not really. People are waiting with knives and swords to judge them. So that's the world I enter in Zoya's film.

"In Rock On", my character's world is all about his dreams. Not so in "Luck By Chance". There're lots more psychological layers to my character here, more stress to deal with.

Q: How is it being directed by Zoya?

A: To begin with, I'm extremely happy and proud that she's finally directing a film. She's very sure of what she wants. She's a lot clearer about what she wants from me as an actor than I am. I'm working to understand her interpretation of my character to be able to play the guy in a way that I understand him. Fortunately, I'm quite disciplined as an actor. It's imperative for me to take my director very seriously even if she is my sister. When I'm on the sets with Zoya, I do see her as my sister. But I also see her as my director. I can't separate the two.

Q: In Hollywood, there's Gary Marshall and his sister Penny Marshall making films. But she has never directed him?

A: Is that so? I've no idea.

Q: How's it working with Konkona Sen (Sharma)?

A: She's so easy going. And you don't get a feeling that she knows how incredibly talented she is. Zoya couldn't have asked for more.

Q: Do you have a romantic interest with Konkona?

A: Yeah, there's a so-called love angle between us - so-called because the relationship is not easy to define.

Q; And what about Prachi Desai, your co-star in "Rock On"?

A: She is very sincere. She's a big TV star, but willing to learn on the new medium. Very focused about what she does. I think Gattu cast her really well. I watched the film's first cut and Prachi's character works superbly.

Q: When is the music coming out?

A: It'll be out in July. I've sung five songs in "Rock On". It's mainly rock sounds in Hindi. Whoever has heard them, loves them. Fortunately, I had this amazingly talented composer called Shankar Mahadevan standing on the other side of the glass partition when I recorded my songs. He is an extremely talented singer. He wouldn't allow me to sing wrongly nor would he say, 'Oh-ho sounding great' when it was not. The minute Shankar was happy I knew I was fine.

Q: Finally, your directorial undertaking - where does "Voice From The Sky" stand?

A: We're still starting in October. But some key actors are still to be cast. It'll take me a month more to get the cast in place.

Q: Saif Ali Khan has decided to opt out?

A: Yes, Saif is not working in 'Voice From The Sky' any more. The chase begins all over again.

Dev Anand to build Bollywood studios...in Scotland

London, May 24: Picturesque Scotland may soon host the first permanent Bollywood studios in Europe.

With its picture-postcard lakes, rivers, mountains and hills, the province is a particular favourite of Bollywood veteran Dev Anand, who is planning to shoot his next film in Scotland, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Dev told The Times he is looking for an office and studio on the outskirts of Inverness, the main town on the northern reaches of Scotland that is known as the Highlands.

He said the Highlands would become a permanent hub for the Indian film industry, adding: “I discovered Scotland for Bollywood when I went there 10 years ago. Others will follow me.

“Scotland is beautiful even when it rains,” he said.

Eight Bollywood films were shot in Scotland between 2000 and 2003, after Dev wrote the script for "Main Solah Baras Ki" in the small Scottish town of Pitlochry in 1998.

Dev, who considers Edinburgh, Scotland, to be the prettiest city in the world, plans to film a romance in the Highlands early next year.

The veteran actor-director told The Times the main characters in the film will be a father and his son, and that he is scouring Britain for an “innocent-looking 18- or 19-year-old” to play the other lead part.

Scotland is known in Britain for its multi-ethnic society, love of culture and hospitality.

I'll never have item numbers in my films: Kunal Kohli

Mumbai, May 24: Item numbers are in vogue but Yash Raj Films' blue-eyed director Kunal Kohli doesn't approve of them and says using the term "item" for an actress is derogatory.

"I don't believe in item numbers. Neither do I believe in item girls. How can you call a girl 'item'? It sounds so cheap. It is humiliating," said Kohli.

"I am not against the performance, but the term used for it. Let people use the term, but I will never call any song in my film an item number," he added.

After carving a niche for himself with his previous films "Hum Tum" and "Fanaa", the director returns to the marquee with "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic".

Starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, the film's story revolves around four orphaned children and has elements of magic, love and fun, but no item songs.

Although Kohli has roped in Amisha Patel for a song, he says it is not an item number.

"My film doesn't have item numbers. It has special performance by Amisha Patel, but she is not just doing a song, she also has a very important role in the film."

Rani, Saif give orphan children an evening to remember

Mumbai, May 24: Children of a few orphanages here were treated to a memorable evening when Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and other members of Yash Raj Films' forthcoming movie "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic" sang and danced for them.

Children from eight orphanage homes across the city Friday evening gathered at Bhaidas Hall here to meet Saif, Rani, Amisha Patel, director Kunal Kohli and music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

"Thoda Pyaar..." is about four destitute children.

"Film stars perform at every event. This time, I decided why not give these children a chance to have fun and make them stars of an evening," said Kohli, who has also co-produced the film.

The evening was marked by a soulful performance from the film track by the composer trio who have scored the music for the movie. Saif, who plays the lead character in the film, also performed for the children.

"It is a dream come true. I could never think that Rani didi would dance with me on the same stage. Saif uncle offered me gifts. I will never forget this evening," said a 12-year-old girl from an orphanage.

Rani, who personally interacted with many children and offered them gifts, was an instant hit with the children.

Commenting on the event, Rani said: "Children always fascinate me and I enjoy being with them. They are the most beautiful creations of god."

Highlighting the basic premise of the film, Kohli said: "The film's story revolves around four orphaned children and has the elements of magic, love, emotions and fun."

Added Rani: "It is also about a business tycoon who never got love in his life, four children who are in need of love and an angel who can't love. My role is of an angel sent by god who comes there to bring smile and happiness in their lives."

A situation comes when the four orphans come under the same roof with the business tycoon played by Saif.

"The film also stars Rishi Kapoor and Amisha Patel in a special role," Kohli said.

Compared to Yash Raj Film's earlier movies, this one is made on a low budget. The cost of the film is less than Rs.200 million and has been shot in Delhi, Los Angeles and Bangkok. It is scheduled to hit the theatres June 27.

'Dhoom Dadakka' - an unfunny comedy (Review)

By Subhash K. Jha, Film: "Dhoom Dadakka"; Cast: Sammir Dattani, Shama Sikandar, Shaad Randhawa, Aarti Chhabria, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Gulshan Grover; Director: Shashi Ranjan; Ratings: None

By the time Sammir Dattani and Shaad Randhawa get into drag, this unfunny comedy has dragged on way past 'bad' time.

Everyone uniformly hams through this painful piece of cinematic travesty. There is so much screaming and ranting across the length and breadth of this outrageous ode to idiocy that you wonder if the producer-director Shashi Ranjan intended to provide earplugs for all those brave hearts who would sit to the end of this haphazard comedy of terrors.

No earplugs, what we get are shrill banshee ring-tones of risqué ragas sung at an ear-splitting pitch, and phallic jokes.

If lately you've been wondering where the Bollywood comedy has been heading, here's the answer.

Comedies can't get any baser or brainless than "Dhoom Dadakka". The gags make you gag. The items and innuendoes are embarrassing not because they try hard to be vulgar, but because they fail miserably to be sexy.

Vulgarity in this comedy of disembodied context depends completely on how many of the characters are crammed in one line of vision in every scene. They all stand making faces and gesticulating as though trying to attract the lifeguard's attention from a sinking boat.

The double meanings flow is in abundance mostly from the moist painted trembling lips of Deepshikha, who keeps referring to the size of 'big' things every time she spots a male member of the cast in her vicinity.

"Dhoom Dadakka" is a jumbo-sized non-event.

Before you fall of your creaky bed in comic splendour, let's move on to the main 'coarse' in this pickled over-spiced platter in a hotel that's probably named Romp Teri Giggle Maili.

The two guys, Sammir and Shaad grimace and giggle, roll their eyes and suck in their cheeks to indicate lies buried too deep for jeers. Add two girls - Aarti Chabria and Shama Sikandar trying so hard to be glamorous it's pathetic.

The characterisations take the cult of one-upmanship down to the level of a 'nukkad nautanki', what with every actor getting lost in the confusion of their mistaken identities.

In no time at all, the plot suffers from an identity crisis. Shashi Ranjan, who earlier made us laugh with his supposedly serious study of marital stress in 'Dobara', doesn't know whether to indulge tongue-in-cheek comedy of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee variety or just do the out-and-out no-fools-stops comedy of the David Dhawan-Anees Bazmi variety.

Eventually, the confusions that dominate the plot overpower every sense of aesthetic decency. In the end game where the entire cast runs around an amusement part looking for amusement, the two heroes get into drag to tease laughter out of an audience that's long since ceased to be entertained or amused.

In one chase sequence Shaad pees copiously on a street of Bangkok. You get jailed for dirtying the streets of Bangkok. Alas, there are no laws for desecrating the rules of aesthetics in cinema.

Suniel Shetty in Canadian tie-up for garment business

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 24: Many moons ago, the entrepreneur in Suniel Shetty successfully entered the garment business by launching a series of boutiques across Mumbai called Mischief. Now he is expanding it in a big by tying up with a Canadian company.

"This isn't to say that I'm no longer into Mischief," Suniel said from the jungles of Lonavla where he is playing a Maoist in Ananth Mahadevan's "Red Alert".

"The Mischief chain is still doing well for itself. But now I've tied up to be part of an exclusive line-up of garments called Creative Crossover. It's a company from Vancouver in Canada. When I came across their garments, I saw a great potential for them to grow in these parts," Suniel told IANS.

Suniel, who also entered the filmmaking business by starting his production house Popkorn Entertainment, doesn't intend to be a sleeping partner.

"I can never be inactive in any business association. Though I've made it clear that I won't be taking part in their day-to-day activities, I'll be taking keen interest in the working of this enterprise. I believe the clothes line-up from this group is going to create a lot of interest in the Indian market."

Creative Crossover has just opened a showroom at the Phoenix Mills in suburban Mumbai. "See the showroom. It's an indication of where we intend to take this brand."

Suniel, who has featured in hits like "Hera Pheri" and "Shootout At Lokhandwala", is currently producing "Mission Istanbul".

Priyadarshan bonds well with Shah Rukh

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 24: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan and director Priyadarshan have hit it off big time, be it cinema or cricket.

"After working with him I understand why he is who he is. No one can match his energy, enthusiasm and passion for cinema. I'm already planning many more films with him," Priyadarshan told IANS.

Also, ever since Shah Rukh's Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders won a Kolkata match last month that was attended by Priyadarshan, people have started calling him the actor's lucky mascot.

"Yes, they're saying I'm lucky for Shah Rukh. Thank god. Yes, Shah Rukh has asked me to attend more of his matches. But I've been shooting 'Billo Barber' whereas he has completed his work and has made time for the IPL," Priyadarshan told IANS.

Many people who attended the match were surprised to see Priyadarshan sitting quietly in the audience.

"Even I was surprised to see myself there, but I went for Shah Rukh's sake. Fortunately, the Knight Riders won the match that day when I was there in Kolkata.

"Or people would've said I'm unlucky for Shah Rukh. Can't afford that image while I've cast him in the most unusual role of his career, and that too after four failed attempts to work with him."

Incidentally, Kolkata Night Riders are out of IPL matches.

Recalling his own passion for cricket, Priyadarshan said: "I was a mad obsessive cricket player as a student. Then during one local match I nearly lost my eye."

Recalling the harrowing incident, he shudders, "I can never forget that day. The ball just slammed against my eye. I had a hairline fracture and I couldn't see. I thought I had lost my eye. Fortunately, the eye is intact. But the nerves on the eyelid were enfeebled. So one eye is half-closed all the time."

So has that mishap put him off cricket for keeps?

"No way! I love cricket. Thankfully, I didn't make a career out of it. Otherwise today I'd have been working in a bank. The only reason why I don't play is because I'm making films round the clock. There's no time for anything else," said the director whose recent hit was "Bhool Bhulaiyaa".

Producer Kumar Mangat wants item number for daughter's film

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 24: Nothing can equal the zeal of a father launching his offspring in Bollywood. While filmmaker Harry Baweja goes all out to launch his son Harman, producer Kumar Mangat isn't leaving any stone unturned for his daughter Amita.

On Thursday morning, Mangat, producer of the films "Omkara" and "U, Me Aur Hum", rushed to film two extra songs for "Haal-e-Dil". He has even requested composer Pritam Chakraborty for an instant item number.

The film is complete, post-production and editing is done. Even the music album has already been released. And yet the producer called for an extra song from the item specialist Pritam.

"Yes, we're shooting an extra song for 'Haal-e-Dil'. We all felt the film needed a peppy youthful number. The rest of the songs are all ballads," Mangat told IANS.

"So we asked Pritam to give us a number immediately. Fortunately, he obliged at such short notice, otherwise we'd have been stuck. The song is being choreographed by Ganesh Acharya with my three lead players Adhyayan Suman, Nakuul Mehta and my daughter Amita," he added.

Isn't it unusual to shoot a song after the music release?

"Well...not just the young hip item song, we're shooting another song, a love ballad featuring Amita and Adhyayan from June 1 in Leh... just two weeks ahead of release. How will these songs be censored? Oh, the rest of the film will be censored first. We can get the two songs censored later.

"Amita is my only daughter. And I know she has it in her to make it. My son is not interested in acting. He's going into direction. We've had so many fathers launching their sons, but I think this is the first occasion when a producer-father is launching his daughter.

"As a father I've to make sure I leave nothing to chance for Amita. Adding the songs to the film will, we feel, really add to the film."

Adds Pritam, "It was Bhushan Kumar of T-Series who asked for an immediate song for 'Haal-e-Dil'. Fortunately, a Bhangra song sung by Labh Janjua (of 'Soni de nakhre' fame) was with me. I had composed it for another film where the Punjabi flavour didn't fit in. Bhushan and Kumar Mangatji loved the song and I had no problems giving it to them."

But isn't this stepping into composer Vishal Bhardwaj's jurisdiction as he has composed some of the songs in the film?

"I made the producers get me a no objection certificate from Vishal before I gave them the song. And besides Vishal, there're two other music composers in 'Haal-e-Dil'. If it was just Vishal, I'd have never contributed. I respect him too much to step into his territory."

Neil Mukesh carries forward grandpa's legacy

Mumbai, May 24: Budding actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who is the grandson of legendary playback Mukesh, is turning singer for new director Jehangir Surti's thriller "Freeze".

Neil, who debuted with the critically acclaimed thriller "Johnny Gaddar" and whose father Nitin Mukesh is also a singer, will sing the theme song for the film. Pritam Chakraborty is composing the track.

"I wouldn't call myself an extremely accomplished singer. But, yes, I am much more than a bathroom singer. I carry my notes well. But having grown up on my grandfather's songs and watched my dad struggling to get out of Mukesh's shadows I was scared to try my hand at singing as a career," Neil told IANS.

Although Neil, who will be seen in Kabir Khan's next movie for Yash Raj Films, has chosen to be an actor, he's an accomplished singer and was at one time toying between a career in singing and acting.

Pritam is all praise for Neil and said: "Neil will be singing the theme song. It'll be somewhat like the James Bond theme in mood because that is the mood of 'Freeze'. I've always been a Mukesh fan. I couldn't compose for him, but it's such an honour to compose for his grandson.

"I'll listen carefully to the texture of Neil's voice and then compose accordingly. But since he is the grandson of Mukesh and son of Nitin Mukesh, I'm sure he sings well.

"Also, being a good actor, there would be no problem for Neil in expressing the emotions in the lyrics. I'm quite kicked to have an actor singing for me. Unlike other actors turned singers, Neil won't be just a glamorous USP in the soundtrack. He knows what he's doing."

Neil and singing go back a long way.

"As a child I did accompany my dad on his world tours and even sang on stage, but never my grandpa's songs. I preferred Kishore Kumar. I never intended to sing professionally, but it seems god and the movie industry have other plans for me," said Neil.

Interestingly, Mukesh too was an actor to begin with but he gave up his acting aspirations to concentrate on singing.

"I'm aware of my grandfather's films. I grew up listening to his songs. I also know how to play the piano. I think that gives my singing an edge."

Neil's song for "Freeze" will be designed to enhance his vocal qualities and to accentuate his antecedents.

Daughter – Act of ambitious doctor Rucha

Rucha, the bubbly 12th standard science student, is making her debut in Bollywood with the film Daughter in which she plays the lead role of an adopted girl.

This 17 years’ budding actress seems to possess the sincerity and resolve to combine her studies with a demanding performance to win the hearts of a tough audience of Indian arties. Doing a guest appearance in a Marathi film Gojiri she is all set to play the lead role in her debut film Daughter. Albeit she has proved her prowess in acting, her dream is to become a doctor. Let’s check out what she has to say about her debut film and her ambitions in life.

Q. How did you bag this role?
A. I want to be a doctor and acting happened to me suddenly. Viju Mane came to me with this idea of the film Daughter. He thought that I suited the role better than anyone.

Q. What is the film Daughter all about?
A. The word Daughter itself has the power to stir within it the indescribable innocence, love and sense of belonging. It brings in the whole lot of happiness and a new meaning to the word ‘home’. The story is one of such daughter called Rucha, played by me, who, being an orphan, accepts the orphanage as her home until she gets adopted by a rich family who later makes her believe what home and relationships are and how important are they in the society.

Q. Have you undergone any professional training in acting?
A. Yes I did, but not a full time. I did a crash course in acting with Alopi Verma.

Q. With which director would you like to work in future?
A. I would like to work with Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra and Shimit Amin. I like Karan Johar's films a lot, too.

Q. How was it working with Vikram Gokhale and Padmini Kohlapure?
A. Firstly, I do not have any professional training in acting due to which I was a little afraid of how the things will turn up. Then when I met Vikramji on the set he told me that the way I was talking to him normally should be followed while facing the camera and everything will become easy. So he was like my total institution. And working with Padminiji was very nice. Albeit they have stardom, neither Padminiji nor any other actors in the film behaved like a star with me. Padminiji kept giving me tips every time and it’s only because of their support that I felt confident. Padminiji treated me as her own daughter.

Q. Any interesting incident that you can re-call that happened on the sets of the film?
A. There were few moments on the first day of the shooting which I could never forget. The shooting was scheduled at 4 am but it took place at around 12 am as it was raining heavily. Finally the rain stopped and we did the shot, but I feared of the outcome of the shot I gave. But when we saw it on the screen it was like superlative. Our director declared it as an okay shot.

Q. Before doing this film, did you knew what adoption is and did you ever visit any orphanage?
A. Yes I knew about it and I did visit an ashram and watched everything that happened over there. I was really amazed to know the kind of life one has to live in ashram. I found that their life is very different from us.

Q. What other activities you like to do?
A. I love to dance a lot. Even if there is music being played in my neighbor, I dance. Since I have given my 12th standard exam, I have a full month vacation in my hand, which I would utilize for a professional training course in dance.

Q. If not an actor then what would you have been?
A. I never thought that I will take up acting as I always dreamt of becoming a doctor and do acting simultaneously. Acting is my passion and to become a doctor is my ambition.

Q. Who inspired you to be a doctor?
A. My mother is a doctor so she has been my inspiration.

Q. Any other projects you have signed up?
A. As of now I am with this film only and I have not signed any other film. But if some interesting story comes my way, I will definitely do it.

Comparing with King Khan and Akki – Nakul Mehta

Having a trail of modeling for more than fifty brands like Cadbury, Eureka Forbs, Sprite, Thumps Up, Clinic All Clear and likes, Nakul Mehta will soon be seen on big screen.

Starting his filmy career with Kumar Mangat’s Haal-E-Dil, the bubbly boy Nakul is happy having no filmy background. Why and how? Let’s know it from Nakul Himself…

Q.: What about your character?
A.: I am playing the character named Shekhar. He is a 24 year guy with mischievous mind accompanied by a big mouth. All the girls love him. Till the time he falls for someone, he has no realization of real love. His life suddenly changes once he falls for a girl. He enters into absolute matured zone of life from his absolute frivolity.

Q.: How do you have the sense of responsibility in real life?
A.: I am very much responsible in my real life. I have seen much in my small yet packed life. I have experience of working in theater for three years. At the same time I worked in fields like share, marketing and IT. My father was in Navy. So I had seen the whole India with him. I personally believe that an actor must have every kind of experience.

Q.: Was it easy for you to become an actor?
A.: Not at all. Whatever I have achieved are only through hard work and dedication. My father’s posting to Mumbai proved to be a boon to me. Once I reached Mumbai I started modeling for ads. After a while I joined Mujib Khan’s theater group ‘Idea’. After getting attached to theater I started getting offers for films, too. Slowly and steadily I continued getting closer to my destiny. In the mean time, apart from Mujib Khan, I worked for Om Katare in his group ‘Yatri’ and staged English drama for Joy Fernandez, too. In this way I just continued dragging myself up and now you can see me in front of you!

Q.: How did you bag Haal-E-Dil?
A.: Actually Kumar Mangatji watched me in an ad and calling me to his office he introduced me with Ajay Devgan. He told Ajay that he wants someone like me for his daughter to appear opposite in film. Then followed a four hour long audition in which I had to go through several tests.

Q.: Both Amita and Addhyan are new for audience but you are a known face. Will that help you in this film?
A.: If few people know me and if because of that they come to watch the film, it’ll surely be a profit for my film only. And if something proves better for my film then it’ll be good for me also. I don’t consider myself separate from my film.

Q.: While two actors share screen, audience expect much competitive drama from them. And this is first film for both of you. Competition between two actors must be higher…
A.: Truly speaking, we barely had chance to work together. I know very little about him. Still, I can say he is very good guy. It would be wrong thinking about competition after knowing someone for such a short period. It’s better to wish all the best for Addhyan.

Q.: How do you believe in competition?
A.: I believe in it. Many people are joining this industry everyday. But there are very few directors working here. So, only better actors will have chance to work with them.

Q.: As you have mentioned about new faces, then talk about them nah…
A.: For the time being I can see only three new faces. First being that of mine and the others are Amita and Addhyan.

Q: There are many new faces that have filmy background. How do you think of getting your own space in this industry?
A.: Watching a film no audience think about actors having any filmy background. They look only for acting. Take for example Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. None of them have any filmy legacy. If I am good then there is job for me and I am not afraid for any reason, at all. What I think is it’s better for me that I don’t have any filmy background.

Q.: Have you signed any other film?
A.: For the time being I have no more film in hand. I took so much time signing this film only. I will sign my second film only if I feel confident about affording eight to ten months from my life for that film. I don’t want to just sign films here; I have to build my career.

Tania Zaetta seeks legal advice against Aussie government

Sydney, May 23: Bollywood import from Australia Tania Zaetta, who is at the centre of a defence sex scandal investigation, has termed Australian government responsible for the leaking of allegations terming it as a ''breach of national security''.

Zaetta said last night she had briefed lawyers and strongly denied unsubstantiated allegations that she had sex with Australian soldiers during an entertainment tour to the military base in Afghanistan last month.

Her decision to seek legal advice came after the Defence Department admitted the actress' name getting leaked to the media from a draft briefing note.

''How does a supposed document... that I don't know about get leaked in the first place - that's a little bit concerning about the security of the country,'' she said, adding, it was a completely made-up lie.

Defence has confirmed that an investigation into the claims is under way and yesterday ''apologised unreservedly'' to Zaetta for disclosing the claims.

Adlabs launches India's first 6-D movie screen in Agra

Agra/Mumbai, May 23: Adlabs Cinema Friday launched India's first six-dimension (6-D) movie screen at Agra, where cutting edge technology would provide a multi-sensory cinematic experience as never experienced by the audience.

Explaining the 6-D cinema, Adlabs Cinema's chief operating officer (COO) Tushar Dhingra said that unlike two-dimensional (2-D) or three-dimensional (3-D) theatres, the new theatre's technology employs cutting-edge visual and audio effects that allows the audience to simultaneously experience sight, sound, smell, touch, motion and even interact with the characters.

Part of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, the 6-D theatre - in colloboration with Cinema Park Networks - is located near the Taj Mahal. Adlabs said that 6-D cinema is set to become a distinctive global tourist entertainment attraction.

In the 6-D theatre, two digital video players play simultaneously and project a 3-D film on the screen. The visitors sit on Smart Motion Seats that move around, have bass shakers and multiple ticklers. Viewers also experience special effects, such as breeze, water spray and smoke.

In the Interactive Theatre, which is the first ever interactive cinema theatre in the world, each viewer holds a wireless remote unit with push buttons and a small LCD screen, enabling them to participate in a trivia game about the theme of the film.

An introductory special 30-minute film called “India In Motion” has been shot where actor Anupam Kher takes the audiences through India's evolution from an ancient civilization to a modern nation.

The audience will pass through today's India in - or on - a variety of typical vehicles and see the historical events at sites like Mohenjo Daro, Indraprastha and the Taj Mahal, experiencing the bumpy elephant rides with the wind blowing through their hair, or the swaying boat with salty spray on their faces.

With the 6-D screen, the Cinema Park Network puts Agra on an impressive list of destinations worldwide that host this attraction. Their 450 projects include cities like Jerusalem, Rome, Baltimore, Athens, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Orlando, Mexico and Sweden.

“We are confident that the combination of the prime location in Agra and the state-of-the-art technology, the 6-D cinema will become the most comprehensive and outstanding focal point for visitors not merely in Agra, but in the whole of India - adding a whole new dimension to the country's tourism and entertainment industries," said Dhingra at the launch Friday.

Adlabs is India's largest cinema chain with 163 screens across 63 cinemas across the country. It was the first to introduce entertainment destinations such as the IMAX at the largest dome theatre in the world and has also pioneered the concept of megaplexes in the country.

Cinema Park Network is a pioneer and international leader in the production of multi-sensory educational films.

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 2 : Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan is over the moon at becoming father for the second time.

Wife Susanne delivered a baby boy Thursday. Weighing 3.3 kg, the baby was born at the Lilavati Hospital.

"It feels wonderful!" a jubilant Hrithik told IANS from the hospital. "I never thought fatherhood the second time would be so special, so exhilarating. I can't take my eyes off the baby… He is soooooooo beautiful!!"

Hrithik's voice brimmed over with paternal pride. Any disappointment for the fact that the second child wasn't a girl as Hrithik wanted?

"Earlier, before the baby came, I did want a girl this time, yes. To complete the family picture. But the minute I saw my new baby's face I was as content as I could be… In fact he has already had his first photo-session, ha ha. The entire family of about 35 people except my dad is here. "Right now we haven't thought of any particular name. We're just so happy to see him healthy and happy. Both mom and child are fine. Susanne will be home in a day or two."

This is the couple's second son. Their first son, Hrehaan, is two years old. Their mothers - Pinky Roshan and Zarine Khan - are ecstatic and making elaborate plans to welcome the baby to the Roshan House and then to the Khan villa in Juhu, a short distance away.

Visa vows put Atif craze on hold

Mumbai, May 02: Despite being a huge hit in India, Pakistan singer Atif Aslam has to overcome a number of visa issues each time the artist has to fly to the country for an song recording.

Atif’s visa problem has forced Bollywood composer, Pritam Chakraborty, to rush to Lahore to record a song with the singer for the upcoming film `Kismat Konnection`.

`I need to urgently record a song with Atif for Aziz Mirza`s `Kismat Connection`, but he is suddenly having problems with his visa. So he can`t come to Mumbai, I`m flying down to Lahore to record the song with him,` Pritam, who composed music for films like `Life...In a Metro`, told reporters.

Pritam, who is known for using Pakistani voices brought on Atif in his latest project after the singer delivered a super hit number, `O jaan-e-jaana` (Race) that went on to break all records.

The composer, who has roped in another Pak singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for Mani Shankar`s `Mukhbiir`, now says that if the problem persists, he will bring in some Indian singer to record the promotional number for Mani Shankar`s `Mukhbiir`.

`There`s one more song, a special promotional number, which I`ve just composed for Mani Shankar`s `Mukhbiir`. That requires Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. I just might record that song too while I`m in Lahore. Or I may go for an Indian voice.`

Despite all the talk of amity, solidarity and free-flowing cultural exchanges between India and Pakistan, artists from the neighbouring country seem to be finding it hard to obtain permission to come to Mumbai to record songs.

This is not the first incident of such nature. Mahesh Bhatt, who had roped in Pakistan band Jal for his upcoming flick, ‘Jannat’ had faced similar issues.

Talking to reporters, Bhatt said, `If singers from across the border are finding it difficult to come here, then let me tell you, our prime minister had personally assured me that the entertainment industry is free to move back and forth and that the bureaucracy of neither side would be allowed to obstruct us.”

India-Pakistan joint venture movie on the anvil

Mumbai, May 1 : After the box-office success of the Pakistani movie "Khuda Ke Liye" in India, Percept Picture Company, the movie's India distributor, has decided to launch a joint film venture with the director of the film.

Confirming this, Ashok Ahuja, one of the directors of Percept Picture Company, told IANS Thursday that the company was in talks with "Khuda Ke Liye" director Shoaib Mansoor.

"Plans, however, have not yet been concretised. It will take some time. When everything is ready, we will make an announcement. But a joint production will happen. That's for sure," Ahuja said.

When Mansoor was in Mumbai recently, he told a section of the media that Percept Picture Company talked with him about a joint venture movie. He said he would be happy if the project came to fruition.

"Khuda Ke Liye" has grossed around Rs.60 million in India in six weeks so far and the movie is yet to be released in many centres in the country.

Its box-office earnings are expected to be substantial by the time it covers all the centres in the country, considering the response it has received wherever it has been released so far.

"Khuda Ke Liye" had grossed Rs.70 million at the Pakistani box-office, the first Pakistani movie to generate that kind of theatrical revenues.

The movie was made on a budget of a little over Rs.60 million, unprecedented for a Pakistani movie.

Fun time for Anupam Kher with 'Mr. Bhatti...' sequels

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 1 : Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher enjoyed working in the amateur-detective movie "Mr Bhatti On Chutti" so much that he is now making a series of films on the same theme.

Anupam collaborates with his National School of Drama (NSD) pal Karan Razdan who had written and directed "Mr. Bhatti On Chutti", which was extensively shot in Britain.

"I entered a new international phase of my career when I did Gurinder Chadha's 'Bend It Like Beckham'. Now I'm going into another phase with 'Mr. Bhatti On Chutti'. It's directed by my NSD mate Karan Razdan," Anupam told IANS.

"We shot it as a one-off thing. But the film has been such fun that we've decided to shoot an entire series of feature films based on the exploits of this amateur detective called Bhatti. We'll have 'Mr. Bhatti Goes To China', 'Mr Bhatti in New York', and so on and so forth."

Anupam says that they will make the series in Hinglish.

"I have a double role in 'Mr. Bhatti On Chutti'. Besides, the detective who's like Feluda and Hercule Poirot, I also play a sinister international terrorist. The idea is to let this detective and, by proxy, the audience have fun. And we're making the series in 'Hinglish' and with an international cast comprising Indian, Pakistani and Australian actors.

"Apart from being an amateur sleuth, Bhatti is a big Amitabh Bachchan fan," said Anupam.

In fact, the Big B makes an appearance at the end of the film.

Upen Patel didn't mind stepping in for Salman

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, May 1 : Everyone is talking about actor Upen Patel's daredevil act at the Zee awards function in London, but the actor says it was originally designed for Bollywood star Salman Khan.

"I was actually asked to step into Salman Khan's act at the last minute. Believe it or not, I had just one hour to rehearse! I don't know how I managed it," Upen, who featured in films like "36 China Town" and "Namastey London", told IANS.

"Salman, I'm told, couldn't come for his performance because of a torn ligament. I happily agreed to be a last-minute replacement because I didn't want them to incur losses. Why wouldn't I want to step in for Salman? He's a rock star. Besides, they altered Salman's act to suit my personality.

"Initially, I was supposed to dance to two songs from 'Partner'. But when I stepped in, they re-structured the intro with bits of my songs from '36 China Town' and 'Shakalaka Boom Boom' to begin the act."

The response Upen got from his fellow-Londoners on the Saturday event was unimaginable.

"London is my home. And to perform there was a dream come true for me. My mom, my sister and my entire family watched me. They had planned a lavish act with Salman with motorbikes on stage and everything."

Earlier, Upen was supposed to be part only of Shah Rukh Khan's act.

"He did a kind of 'Om Shanti Om' with a gender reversal where instead of all the heroines all the heroes joined him on stage. I was only supposed to be a part of that. But thanks to Salman, I had two acts, one for myself and one with Shah Rukh. The press here in London has gone ballistic over my act. I can't get over it."

I'm doing ken ghosh's movie : Jiah Khan

Subhash K. Jha: “Nishabd” fame Jiah Khan, who has shot for two days for Ken Ghosh’s next, is shocked to hear rumours that she’s out of the project and Katrina Kaif is in.

“I’ve already shot for two days for the untitled film with Shahid Kapur. After that there were scheduling issues. My dates for Ken’s film were clashing with Aamir Khan’s ‘Ghajini’. I couldn’t possibly let the Aamir project suffer at any cost. It’s my chance to create the impact that I couldn’t, for some weird reasons, after Nishabd,” Jiah told IANS.

However, the date problem has been sorted out and Jiah is set to shoot for Ghosh’s film.

“I’ve already given my dates for Ken’s shooting. No one has so far informed me that I’m not in the film. So it’d be right for me to presume the project remains as it is.”

As for talk of her over-friendly messages to Shahid, Jiah protests: “I’ve just sent him a couple of formal messages saying how much I’m looking forward to working with him. Is that wrong?”

“I’m new to all this. I keep to myself and I’ve no idea what people do in this industry. I am here only to work.”

Meanwhile, director Ghosh confirmed that Jiah is still in the project.

“I wouldn’t like to say much on the matter. I’ll let my producers UTV clear all the misunderstanding. But Jiah is very much in the project. This isn’t to say that I don’t want to work with Katrina Kaif. Of course, I do. Look how hot she’s at the box office! We’ll work together some other time. It’s a small industry.”

But how could Katrina be eligible for a role earmarked for Jiah?

“Why not?” Ghosh shot back. “Didn’t Mr. Bachchan do ‘Zanjeer’ in place of Dev Anand? And didn’t Mr. Bachchan say yes to ‘Deewaar’ after Rajesh Khanna opted out? These things happen all the time. Like I said, it’s a small world.”
